The Tennis Gardens, Spa, and Morgan’s House — “Sport and Serenity”

In the 1980s, La Quinta expanded its legacy of leisure by adding tennis, spa, and wellness experiences that would attract both athletes and those seeking rejuvenation. What began as an olive tree estate was transformed into the resort’s Tennis Club, featuring both grass and hard courts—a nod to classic Wimbledon-style play under the California sun. The courts soon drew professionals and enthusiasts alike, making La Quinta a premier desert sports destination.

Just beyond, Spa La Quinta opened in 1998, bringing with it a tranquil blend of natural therapies and desert-inspired treatments. This peaceful sanctuary reflects the same values Walter Morgan held nearly a century earlier—renewal, relaxation, and a deep connection to the land. Nearby stands Morgan’s House, the founder’s original Spanish Colonial home, framed by mountain views that once inspired the resort itself.

Did you know?

  • The center court at the Tennis Club was once a converted swimming pool from the original estate.

  • Spa La Quinta was built around the concept of desert renewal—using natural botanicals and scents native to the Coachella Valley.

  • Walter Morgan’s home, designed by Gordon Kaufmann, still stands as a private residence on the resort grounds.
